Peony Monsieur Jules Elie, a classic herbaceous variety introduced in 1888 by French breeder Auguste Crousse, is an iconic heirloom renowned for its lavish beauty and historical significance. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, unfurl in a soft rose-pink hue with a silvery sheen, evoking the delicate charm of a Parisian sunrise or fine silk. The densely packed, ruffled petals form a high-crowned, bomb-shaped bloom, occasionally revealing subtle lilac undertones, creating a lush, romantic effect. Each flower releases a strong, sweet fragrance with rich, rosy notes, perfuming the air and making it a favorite for cut flowers. With multiple blooms per stem, Monsieur Jules Elie delivers a radiant early-season display lasting 2–3 weeks, ideal for borders, bouquets, or traditional landscapes.

This variety is as practical as it is stunning, blending heirloom aesthetics with robust performance. Its sturdy, upright stems, reaching 80–90 cm, support the heavy blooms through rain or wind, though staking may be needed in exposed sites, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, Monsieur Jules Elie establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of reliable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 80–90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as an elegant accent in formal or cottage gardens, Peony Monsieur Jules Elie infuses spaces with serene sophistication and timeless charm.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  • Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
  • Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
  • Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
  • As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
