Our story

Founded in the Netherlands in 2009.

Dutch Bulbs began in the Netherlands in 2009 with one goal: to make planting material from Dutch growers more accessible to gardeners across Europe, without a long chain of intermediaries. As more customers asked for peonies, we created Peonita as a separate shop dedicated only to peonies.

Peonies are a plant where origin, root quality, storage and timing matter. A peony bought as a strong division can flower for decades; a weak one can take years to recover. That is why we focus on one plant and do it carefully.

Our mission is to make it easier to plant a peony garden that lasts: to shorten the route from the Dutch grower to your garden, to explain clearly what you receive, and to help you choose varieties that suit your garden and climate.

Our team works with growers, receives and stores the roots, and picks and packs every order. Customer support answers questions before you order and helps with planting and growing questions after delivery.

Why peonies from the Netherlands?

A long tradition of peony growing.

The Netherlands has a long tradition of growing peonies for gardens and cut flowers. Dutch growers propagate and divide peony roots professionally, sort them by size and prepare dormant roots for transport in autumn and spring.

The Dutch Flower Bulb Inspection Service (BKD) supervises the trade in flower bulbs and perennial planting material. Dutch-Bulbs B.V. is a registered BKD member.

How we work with growers

From the grower's field to your order.

The condition of a peony root matters at every step. This is how we work with growers and prepare your order.

1. 01 / Grower selectionSelecting partners We buy from specialist Dutch peony growers and check their planting material at the farm.
2. 02 / StorageKeeping roots dormant Roots are kept in climate-controlled storage in Voorhout until they are dispatched.
3. 03 / Order preparationPicking your roots We select the varieties and quantities for each order and check every root by hand.
4. 04 / Packing and dispatchPreparing for delivery Roots are packed in breathable packaging and shipped from 1 October to 1 June, when they can be planted.

3. 03 / In storageDormancy Checking temperature, humidity and that the roots stay firm and dormant.
4. 04 / Before dispatchFinal order check Verifying variety, quantity, labelling and readiness for transport.

Every herbaceous and Itoh peony is delivered as a bare-root division with 3–5 eyes, the growth buds that become next year's stems. Roots are packed in breathable material that keeps them fresh without trapping moisture. Our sizes and quality →

Shipped from Voorhout to 28 countries.

We ship peony roots from the Netherlands from 1 October to 1 June, the period when roots are dormant. Shipping costs depend on your country and are shown at checkout; most EU countries have free shipping from €75.

Our flowering guarantee

We offer a 100% flowering guarantee, subject to our guarantee terms. If your roots arrive damaged, send us a photo within 48 hours of delivery. If a root does not grow or flower although you followed our planting instructions, contact us and we will send a free replacement or refund you after reviewing your case.

Returns and refunds

You have 14 days after delivery to tell us that you want to cancel your purchase. Returns must be arranged with customer support first. We refund within 10 working days after receiving the return; return shipping is paid by you unless the item was damaged or wrong.
