Peony Alexander Fleming is a classic herbaceous variety bred in 1950 by Dutch breeder Blonk, a cross between Sarah Bernhardt and Bunker Hill, and named in honor of the scientist who discovered penicillin. Its large, fully double flowers open in a rich, warm rose-pink that softens gently toward the outer edges, creating a subtle, luminous gradient. Each bloom carries an intensely sweet fragrance, making it one of the most aromatic peonies in the garden and a long-time favorite for cut flowers and bouquets.

Sturdy stems rise to about 90 cm, holding the generous blooms upright even as multiple side buds extend the flowering display well beyond the main bloom. The glossy, deep green foliage forms a lush, bushy mound that stays attractive through summer, often taking on warm tones in autumn. Hardy in USDA zones 3–8, Alexander Fleming thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, and rewards minimal care with decades of dependable, vigorous flowering.

Blooming in the mid-to-late season for about 7–10 days, Peony Alexander Fleming is ideal for borders, mixed beds, or as a fragrant addition to cut arrangements, bringing rich color and classic peony charm to any garden setting.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  • Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
  • Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
  • Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
  • As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
