A fragrant French heirloom whose name means “Crown of Gold”: large pure white double flowers with a ring of golden stamens and crimson-tipped inner petals.
Why gardeners love it
- Fully double white flowers of 15–20 cm with a golden glow in the centre.
- Strong, sweet fragrance – excellent for cutting, with a vase life of about a week.
- Side buds extend the display; flowers in May–June.
- Finely cut, dark green foliage stays attractive all summer.
Where to plant
Full sun or light shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Upright stems of about 70–90 cm; the bush can reach up to 90 cm wide, so plant 75–90 cm apart. Lovely in mixed borders, cottage and formal gardens, and in a cutting bed.
Good to know
Delivered as a dormant bare root with 3–5 eyes; plant with the eyes 3–5 cm below the surface. Usually flowers from the 2nd–3rd year, then every year for decades. See more white peonies.

Will it flower in the first year?
Will it flower in the first year?
Peonies take time to settle. A 3–5 eye root builds a strong plant in its first year and usually flowers from the 2nd or 3rd year, then every year for decades. If your peony has not grown or flowered although you followed our planting instructions, our 100% flowering guarantee applies: we replace it or refund you.

Guide and tips for planting peony roots
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the peony root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the root in the hole with the eyes (small buds) facing up. For herbaceous and Itoh peonies, the eyes should be 2–5 centimeters below the soil surface; plant tree peonies at the depth they grew in the nursery.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
