Peony Cornelia Shaylor, a classic herbaceous variety introduced in 1919 by American breeder Amos Whiting Shaylor, is an heirloom treasure celebrated for its impressive form and subtle color evolution. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, open in a pale blush-pink hue with immense outer guard petals, transitioning to a flesh-white collar and a compact, rose-like center in a slightly darker shade, evoking the graceful fade of a vintage lace gown. As the globular blooms mature, they become almost white with a subtle greenish tint at the petal bases, creating a mesmerizing, high-built spectacle. The very faint fragrance adds a delicate touch, while strong stems bear multiple floriferous blooms, delivering a reliable late-season display lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a favorite for borders, bouquets, or traditional landscapes.
This variety is as practical as it is enchanting, blending heirloom aesthetics with robust performance. Its tall, sturdy stems, reaching 90–100 cm, support the heavy blooms through rain or wind without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, Cornelia Shaylor establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of effortless beauty. The dark, glossy green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as an elegant accent in cottage or formal gardens, Peony Cornelia Shaylor infuses spaces with serene sophistication and timeless charm.

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
