Peony Catharina Fontijn, a classic herbaceous variety introduced in 1952 by Dutch breeders Van der Valk and Van der Zwet, is a fragrant beauty that captivates with its color-shifting allure. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, emerge from deep pink buds and unfurl in a soft blush rose-pink, gradually fading through delicate blush tones to nearly pure white while retaining a subtle pink center. In its final stage, the bloom reveals a striking boss of golden-yellow stamens, creating a pillowy cloud of layered petals that evokes the gentle fade of a summer dawn. The very fragrant flowers, with sweet, rosy notes, perfume the air and make exceptional cut flowers, lasting up to a week in vases. With multiple blooms per stem, Catharina Fontijn delivers a midseason display lasting 2–3 weeks, ideal for borders or bouquets.
This variety is as practical as it is enchanting, though it requires good air circulation to avoid botrytis in damp conditions. Sturdy, dark stems reaching 90–95 cm support the heavy blooms without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil, it establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and generally pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of reliable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a tall, bushy mound up to 90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and turning purplish-gold in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower, or as an elegant accent in traditional or cottage gardens, Peony Catharina Fontijn infuses spaces with serene sophistication and timeless charm.

                      How to Plant?
Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
