Paeonia Red Charm, an award-winning hybrid introduced in 1944 by the esteemed American breeder Lyman Glasscock, is a true standout, celebrated for its dramatic flair and commanding presence. This variety produces massive, fully double flowers, often reaching 8–10 inches across, that burst forth in a rich, velvety crimson-red hue, evoking the deep, luxurious tones of a fine merlot or a royal tapestry. The tightly packed petals form a dense, globular bloom with a slightly ruffled texture, creating a bold, sculptural effect that captivates the eye like a masterpiece in a gallery. Unlike many red peonies, Red Charm’s vibrant color holds its intensity without fading, even under the bright sun, and its subtle, spicy fragrance—reminiscent of cloves and warm earth—adds an intoxicating depth that draws admirers closer. This peony’s striking beauty and robust form make it a perfect choice for gardeners seeking to infuse their landscapes with a sense of passionate elegance and unapologetic grandeur, whether as a focal point in a border or a show-stopping element in a bouquet.

Beyond its mesmerizing aesthetics, Paeonia Red Charm is a gardener’s dream for its vigor and dependability. Its thick, sturdy stems, reaching 80–90 cm, provide unwavering support for the heavy, voluptuous blooms, ensuring they stand tall through rain, wind, or heat without the need for staking, making it ideal for USDA zones 3–8. This hybrid thrives in full sun to light shade, preferring fertile, well-drained soils enriched with compost, and once established, it exhibits remarkable resistance to pests, diseases, and drought, promising decades of reliable performance. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a dense, bushy mound that remains attractive throughout the growing season, transitioning to warm bronze-red hues in autumn for added seasonal drama. Perfect for bold mixed borders, as a striking accent in modern or traditional gardens, or as a long-lasting star in floral arrangements, Paeonia Red Charm brings a sense of fiery sophistication and enduring allure, creating an atmosphere of vibrant energy and timeless beauty wherever it blooms.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  • Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
  • Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
  • Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
  • As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
