Peony Otto Froebel, a striking herbaceous variety named after the German educator Friedrich Fröbel, is a vibrant selection of Paeonia peregrina introduced in the early 20th century, celebrated for its bold color and compact form. Its single, goblet-shaped flowers, spanning 10–12 cm across, unfurl in a brilliant vermilion-red hue, evoking the fiery intensity of a Balkan sunset, with prominent orange-yellow stamens creating a glowing contrast at the center. The glossy, dark green, divided foliage provides a lush backdrop, enhancing the flower's dramatic presence. Each bloom releases a subtle, fresh fragrance, attracting pollinators for a lively early-season display lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a favorite for borders, bouquets, or naturalistic landscapes.

This variety is as practical as it is stunning, combining vivid aesthetics with robust performance. Its erect, sturdy stems, reaching 60 cm, support the blooms through rain or wind without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to partial shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil, Otto Froebel establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of reliable beauty. The compact foliage forms a tidy mound up to 50–60 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as a bold accent in cottage or contemporary gardens, Peony Otto Froebel infuses spaces with radiant energy and timeless sophistication.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  • Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
  • Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
  • Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
  • As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
