Paeonia Nippon Beauty, a Japanese-style peony introduced in 1920, is a striking variety that embodies the refined artistry of its cultural namesake. This cultivar dazzles with its large, single to semi-double flowers, each spanning 6–8 inches, showcasing a vivid, deep crimson-red hue that commands attention like a perfectly crafted kimono under lantern light. At the heart of each bloom lies a vibrant cluster of golden-yellow stamens, delicately edged with pink, creating a stunning contrast that evokes the intricate beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetics. The petals, satiny and slightly cupped, are arranged in a graceful, open form that allows the flower’s radiant center to shine, exuding a subtle yet intoxicating fragrance that carries notes of spice and sweetness, reminiscent of a tranquil garden at dusk. This variety’s bold yet harmonious color palette and elegant structure make it a captivating focal point, perfect for adding a touch of exotic sophistication to any garden or bouquet.
Beyond its breathtaking beauty, Paeonia Nippon Beauty is prized for its resilience and ease of cultivation, making it a favorite among both novice and seasoned gardeners. Its strong, upright stems, reaching up to 90 cm, provide robust support for the substantial blooms, ensuring they stand tall through summer showers or breezy days without the need for staking. This peony thrives in full sun to light shade and adapts well to fertile, well-drained soils, displaying excellent resistance to pests and diseases in USDA zones 3–8. The glossy, deep green foliage forms a lush, bushy mound that remains attractive throughout the growing season, transitioning to warm bronze tones in autumn for added visual appeal. Whether planted in mixed borders, showcased in elegant floral arrangements, or used to create a serene, Japanese-inspired garden retreat, Paeonia Nippon Beauty brings a sense of poised drama and timeless allure, transforming any space into a haven of beauty and tranquility.

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
