Peony Mme Claude Tain, a classic herbaceous variety introduced in 1968 by French breeder Crousse, is an exquisite heirloom celebrated for its pristine beauty and refined charm. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, unfurl in a pure, snowy-white hue, evoking the delicate elegance of fine lace or a bridal veil bathed in moonlight. The densely packed, ruffled petals form a high-crowned, globular bloom with a subtle creamy glow at the center, creating a luminous, sophisticated effect. Each flower releases a strong, sweet fragrance with rich, rosy notes, perfuming the air and making it a favorite for cut flowers. With multiple blooms per stem, Mme Claude Tain delivers a radiant midseason display lasting 2–3 weeks, ideal for borders, bouquets, or romantic landscapes.
This variety is as practical as it is enchanting, blending heirloom aesthetics with reliable performance. Its sturdy, upright stems, reaching 80–90 cm, support the heavy blooms through rain or wind, though staking may be needed in exposed sites, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, Mme Claude Tain establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of dependable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 80–90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as an elegant accent in formal or cottage gardens, Peony Mme Claude Tain infuses spaces with serene sophistication and timeless charm.

Will it flower in the first year?
Will it flower in the first year?
Peonies take time to settle. A 3–5 eye root builds a strong plant in its first year and usually flowers from the 2nd or 3rd year, then every year for decades. If your peony has not grown or flowered although you followed our planting instructions, our 100% flowering guarantee applies: we replace it or refund you.

How to Plant?
Guide and tips for planting peony roots
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the peony root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the root in the hole with the eyes (small buds) facing up. For herbaceous and Itoh peonies, the eyes should be 2–5 centimeters below the soil surface; plant tree peonies at the depth they grew in the nursery.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
