A milk-flowered peony that blooms very early. A herbaceous perennial. Bred way back in 1939 but still a favourite to this day. Producer: Glasscock (USA). The Flame peony will get a lot of attention.
Its look and feel.
Its name is translated 'Flame'. And it lives up to its name indeed. Its richly bright, fiery flowers. The flowers are simple and have 5-12 petals. The petals are wide, corrugated, arranged in 1-2 rows. The flowers are glossy red-pink with a yellow centre. They fade in the bright sunlight. The central disc is surrounded by pistils and stamens. The flowers are lighter than those of the terry varieties. They do not droop under the weight but are turned upwards. The flower size is 14-17 cm. The flower stems are erect, thin but sturdy. Wind and rain do not fear them. The bush is compact, not falling apart. The leaves are clean green, double ternate, pointed, looking great throughout the season.
This variety belongs to the unpretentious plants. It looks beautiful in flowerbeds and borders, along fences, pavements or walls. A versatile cutting variety. This peony is hardy and drought tolerant. The adult height of the plant is 55-70 cm. Location: full sun or semi-shade. The flowering period is late spring.

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
