Peony Coral Sunset, an award-winning herbaceous hybrid introduced in 1965 by Samuel Wissing and registered by Klehm Nursery, is a radiant breakthrough in coral hues, celebrated for its vigorous growth and color-shifting charm. Its large, semi-double bowl-shaped flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, unfurl from intense coral buds with rose-pink overtones, evoking a tropical sunset, before gracefully fading to pale apricot or ivory while retaining golden-yellow stamen centers for striking contrast. The elegantly ruffled petals form a lush, open bloom that releases a modest, lightly sweet fragrance, perfuming the air and attracting pollinators. Among the earliest to bloom, Coral Sunset produces a profusion of up to 20–30 flowers per plant, delivering a vibrant early-season display lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a favorite for borders, bouquets, or as a cut flower with over a week's vase life.
This variety is as practical as it is stunning, blending vivid aesthetics with robust performance. Its thick, strong stems, reaching 76–91 cm, support the substantial blooms through rain or wind without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost, Coral Sunset establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of reliable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower, or as a vibrant accent in cottage or contemporary gardens, Peony Coral Sunset infuses spaces with radiant warmth and timeless sophistication.

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
