Peony Big Ben, a classic herbaceous peony introduced in 1943 by the renowned American breeder Edward Auten Jr., is a bold and majestic variety that lives up to its commanding name. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, burst forth in a rich, deep red hue with a hint of magenta, evoking the luxurious depth of a vintage wine or the grandeur of a royal banner. The densely packed, velvety petals form a lush, rounded bloom with a slightly ruffled texture, creating a striking, sculptural effect that demands attention. Each flower releases a strong, sweet fragrance with warm, rosy notes, perfuming the air and drawing pollinators to enliven the garden. With its floriferous nature, producing multiple blooms per stem, Big Ben delivers a vibrant midseason display lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a standout choice for gardeners seeking dramatic elegance in borders, bouquets, or formal garden designs.
This variety is as practical as it is stunning, offering robust performance to match its bold aesthetics. Its strong, upright stems, reaching 90–100 cm, provide reliable support for the heavy blooms through rain or wind without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, Big Ben establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of dependable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 90–100 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle reddish-bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as a commanding accent in traditional or contemporary gardens, Peony Big Ben infuses spaces with vibrant grandeur and timeless sophistication.

Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
- Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
- Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
- Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
- Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
- As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
