Peony Sonoma Velvet Ruby is one of the most spectacular representatives of the hybrid line, created by American breeder Roger Tolomeo. This variety captivates with its deep velvety cherry hue, which changes depending on the lighting. The flowers are semi-double, large, with bright yellow stamens in the center, creating a noble contrast.

Its flowers are distinguished not only by their color but also by their excellent structure: the stems are extremely strong and hold the buds well even after rain. The variety blooms profusely, sometimes even repeatedly, and has a light, pleasant aroma. Sonoma Velvet Ruby is perfect for both single plantings and compositions in landscape design. Ideal for cutting — the flowers look noble in a vase and retain their decorative qualities for a long time.

Will it flower in the first year?

Peonies take time to settle. A 3–5 eye root builds a strong plant in its first year and usually flowers from the 2nd or 3rd year, then every year for decades. If your peony has not grown or flowered although you followed our planting instructions, our 100% flowering guarantee applies: we replace it or refund you.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting peony roots

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the peony root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  • Place the root in the hole with the eyes (small buds) facing up. For herbaceous and Itoh peonies, the eyes should be 2–5 centimeters below the soil surface; plant tree peonies at the depth they grew in the nursery.
  • Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the root.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
  • Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
  • As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
